Sept. 13, 1999
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's soccer team will head to Tobacco Road for its first two
ACC contests of the season this week. The Terps will face NC State on Friday at 4 p.m. to start the trip.
Then Maryland will face No. 20 Duke, which upset No. 5 Penn State last Friday in Chapel Hill, N.C., on
Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Terps have dropped four straight games, but will look to get back on the winning trail in North
Carolina. Head coach Shannon Higgins-Cirovski is looking for the Terps to put together a solid
90-minute performance.
"We need to keep doing the little things," Higgins-Cirovski said after the Terps dropped a tough 2-1
decision to Penn on Sunday. "We need to constantly step up for the entire 90 minute game, and start
creating our own luck."
Terps Play Ranked Teams
Maryland faces one of the nation's toughest schedules this season, taking on nine teams that are
ranked or receiving votes in the NSCAA women's soccer poll of Sept. 6. The ACC features five teams
ranked in the top 25 led by No. 1 North Carolina. Also ranked from the conference are No. 7 Clemson,
No. 13 Virginia, No. 20 Duke and No. 25 Wake Forest. Maryland's 1999 schedule features four
non-conference foes that are ranked. USC is ranked No. 15, William & Mary is No. 21 and Baylor is No.
24, while UCLA is among those teams receiving votes in the poll.

The Series Against NC State
The Wolfpack holds a 7-3-3 all-time advantage since the series began in 1987. Over the last three
meetings, Maryland has a 2-0-1 record after topping NC State last year, 5-0. In that game, played Sept.
20, 1998 at Ludwig Field, Jackie Mynarski (Somers, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal, her first of
three in a span of four games. Maryland all-time leading scorer Keri Sarver recorded her first hat trick of
the season. Current Terps Courtney Beirne (Westminster, Md.) and Vita McKenna (Burlington, Ontario)
recorded assists in the win. Goalies Ali Wolff (Richmond, Va.) and Riki-Ann Serrins (Mission Viejo,
Calif.) split time in goal to share the shutout. Maryland won the last game played at Method Road
between the teams, taking a 6-2 decision in 1997.
The Series Against Duke
Maryland has won two in a row in the series against Duke and three of the last five contests, but Duke
leads the all-time series 8-5-2. In last season's battle on Sept. 18, Maryland defeated the then No. 8
Blue Devils, 3-1. Jackie Mynarski recorded a then-career-high three points in the game with a goal and
an assist. Keri Sarver and Emmy Harbo also scored for Maryland. Riki-Ann Serrins earned the win
making one save.
Maryland's last two wins over Duke have come when the Blue Devils were ranked No. 8 (on Sept. 18,
1998) and No. 9 (Nov. 7, 1997 in ACC Tournament). Duke, which was ranked No. 20 in the Sept. 6
NSCAA poll is sure to move up after upsetting No. 5 Penn State and defeating Colorado last week,
when the new poll is issued on Monday, Sept. 13.
Mynarski Named Maryland Student Athlete of Week
Senior tri-captain Jackie Mynarski and men's soccer All-American Taylor Twellman were named as the
student-athletes of the week by the Maryland Department of Athletics for the week of Aug. 30-Sept. 5.
Mynarski scored a career-high two goals in Maryland's victory over UMBC on Sept. 1. She is tied for
eighth on the Terps' career goal-scoring list with 16, ninth with nine career assists and tied for eighth
all-time with 39 points.
Mynarski, who has played in five career NCAA Tournament games and five ACC Tournament games, is
playing midfield for the first time in her career this season. She has played in 74 career games and is
nearing the school's all-time top 10 list for career games played.

Bears' Nikki Hales beat Wolff to the left-hand side from 15 yards out to give Baylor a 2-0 lead.
Baylor closed out the game scoring twice in the final four minutes for the 4-0 final. Wolff made four

Freshmen Draw Starting Nods
Shannon Higgins-Cirovski has depended heavily on freshmen and sophomore-transfer Sara
Gustafson (Reisterstown, Md.) this season. Six different first-year players have started for the Terps in
1999. In fact, over the Terps' first six games, 55 percent of the starting positions have been held by
freshmen or Gustafson. Leading the way for the freshmen starters have been defensive stalwarts
Lindsay Givens (Downingtown, Pa.), Carly Viher (Mentor, Ohio) and Sally Harrison (Virginia Beach, Va.).
The trio has started all six games this season.
Up front, Gustafson has started all six games along with midfielder Valerie Lawrence (Silver Spring,
Md.). Kim King (Media, Pa.) has started the past three games for Maryland.
King started her Maryland career on fire scoring in her first two games. King is the first Maryland
freshman to score in her first two college games since Emmy Harbo scored in each of her two games
in the 1995 season against Virginia Tech and George Mason.
Mynarski Moving Up Charts
Jackie Mynarski moved into a tie for eighth on the Maryland all-time goal scoring list with a tally against
Penn on Sunday. She now has 16 over her four-year career to stand tied with Stefanie Magro (1991-94)
for eighth on the list.
Mynarski is also eighth on the all-time point-scoring list with 41 points after compiling a team-high
seven points in the first six games of 1999.
The Somers, N.Y. native also stands tenth on the all-time career assist list with nine.
