COLLEGE PARK, Md.-- - Sophomores Nick Downing (Redmond, Wash.) and Taylor Twellman (St. Louis, Mo.) have been selected as finalists for the 1999 Hermann Trophy. The Hermann honors the outstanding male and female collegiate soccer players in the United States. The pair were chosen by a select board of coaches and U.S. National team directors, and a complete ballot with all fifteen finalists will be mailed to all Division I coaches on October 15. The winner will be announced Sat., Dec. 11, in a ceremony at the 1999 College Cup in Charlotte, N.C.
Four schools placed two players each on the list of finalists. In addition to Maryland, defending NCAA Champions Indiana, No. 16 Connecticut and UCLA were the other institutions with more than one finalist. The Atlantic Coast Conference placed four finalists on the list. The Terrapins will square off against nine of the fifteen finalists during the 1999 season, including Shaker Asad (NC State) and Ali Curtis (Duke) during the conference season.
Twellman was the Terps' leading scorer a year ago with 16 goals and eight assists and received National Freshman of the Year honors from Soccer America as well as being an all-ACC first team selection. Downing started all 23 games he played on Maryland's backline. A 1998 Soccer America all-freshman team pick, Downing joined Twellman for a stint with the U-20 team last spring.
This year will mark the 33rd time the Hermann trophy has been awarded. The Hermann trophy is named after Robert R. Hermann, founding Chairman of the North American Soccer League. The first Hermann was presented in 1967 to Dov Marcus of Long Island University. In 1988, the Hermann Trophy became the first major-sport collegiate trophy awarded to both male and female athletes. Since that time, North Carolina has dominated the female side, winning seven of eleven times.
