Nov. 18, 2000

Box Score| Notes

Washington, D.C> - Junior forward Deedee Warley (Fort Washington, Md.) scored 19 points to led four players in double figures as Maryland (1-0) pulled away to a 64-40 win over Howard (0-1) in a non-conference opener for both teams at Burr Gymnasium. Warley finished with a 7-for-14 performance from the floor, and also grabbed 11 rebounds.

The first half was deadlocked until Warley led the Terps on a 10-2 run to end the half with a 28-20 Terrapin advantage. Maryland maintained a nine-to-12 point advantage through the first 10 minutes of the second half until a balanced attack proved to be the difference. Junior transfer Jamecca Harrell (Oxon Hill, Md.) scored 12 points, with sophomore Renneika Razor (New York, N.Y.) and junior Rosita Melbourne (Washington, D.C.) each tallying 10 apiece. The Terrapins shot 53 percent from the floor, including 59 percent (13 of22) in the second half, made possible by points in transition off Howard turnovers down the stretch.

The Terrapin fullcourt pressure forced the Lady Bison into 14 second-half turnovers, while limiting them to 28 percent shooting (19 of 66) for the game. Plagued by persistent foul trouble and crippled by a stifling Maryland defense, the Terps even held the Lady Bison scoreless for over six minutes. "That's our plan this year," said Harrell. "We have worked a lot on our defense in practice, because good defense is what it's going to take to win games."

Howard was led by 2000 MEAC Rookie of the Year Andrea Gardner, who had 18 points. Senior guard Channell Washington also contributed 13 points.

Maryland's next contest is another away, non-conference battle this time with Baltimore-area rival Loyola. The Terps and Greyhounds tip-off at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 22, in Baltimore. Maryland's home opener is a week away, as they play host to the Terrapin Classic on Nov. 25-26. The Terps start the action against Wagner at 2 p.m. on the 25th, with Long Beach State and Delaware to follow at 4 p.m. The consolation game will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 26, with the championship game beginning at 4 p.m.
