Postgame Quotes & Notes -- Maryland vs. Norfolk State

Dec. 23, 2000

Recap| Box Score

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -

COACH WIL JONES, NORFOLK STATE: "I always knew Maryland was a top team and a good program. I wanted them (Maryland) to press because they press very well. I even asked him (Gary Williams) in the game when I put some youngsters in, `Gary, press again.' And he said, `What are you talking about, Wil?' I guess he thought he was going to show me up. I wanted him to press the youngsters so they would get accustomed to it.

"I was disappointed that our kids threw the ball away. I thought we could take care of the ball and run. But we made careless mistakes."

COACH GARY WILLIAMS, MARYLAND: "I thought we played well today. We played good basketball. We were unselfish - you shoot 60 percent in the game, and it has a lot to do with guys looking for each other and willing to give the ball up. We had five guys in double figures ... it is a good time to be playing well.

On Norfolk State: "Norfolk State is going to be a good team. They have a good bench, with depth. They are going to do some good things before the year is out.

On Baxter: " We were able to get the ball to Lonny, and he finished. He was great and our players did a great job helping him get the basketball. Lonny gives you whatever he has every game. He doesn't read the scoreboard like some guys do. He just comes and plays hard."

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES: Maryland extended its non-conference home win streak to 74 consecutive games, extending the longest active streak in the nation ... the Terps established season highs for points in a game (123), first half (58) and second half (65) ... Maryland also set season highs for field goals (48) and attempts (80) ... junior center Lonny Baxter had a career-high 32 points on 12 of 14 shooting from the field ... it was the second time he has scored at least 30 points in a game (31 Feb. 6, 2000 vs. NC State) ... it was not Baxter's best effort, percentage-wise, in his career, however ... two years ago on this same date (Dec. 23, 1998), Baxter established a school mark by hitting all 10 of his field goal attempts in a 132-57 win over North Texas ... in two games on this date in his career, he is 22 of 24 (.917) from the field ... Terence Morris had four blocked shots to give him 201 for his career ... Morris is the third player in Maryland history and 16th in ACC history to reach 200 career blocked shots ... Juan Dixon had a season-high 26 points, it was his seventh consecutive game in double figures, with the last three at least 23 ... all 11 active players participated for Maryland, with 10 scoring ... Steve Blake nearly had a triple double (10 points, 9 assists, 8 rebounds) ... his eight rebounds were a career high ... Mike Mardesich scored in double figures (11) for the first time this season, one shy of his career high ... Maryland's 123 points were the most since scoring 132 vs. North Texas two years ago (on this same date) ...
