Postgame Quotes - Maryland Versus UMES

Dec. 30, 2000

Recap| Box Score| Notes

Maryland Coach Gary Williams
"In the first half we came out with a lot of energy. I liked our intensity level. We forced a lot of turnovers and the ball was moving pretty good. In the second half we were flat to start. I think taking off the press had something to do with that. But we have to learn to play without pressing, there will be a lot of times in the next couple of months where we won't want to press and we will have to play good drop-back defense. We learned something there. We really picked it up the last 10 minutes and played very well."

(on Byron Mouton)
"He had a tremendous game. Offensively, he did everything that you want a guy to do. He had 28 points without being selfish. You're happy to see guys get points in those situations."

"We had good balance, with five players in double figures. I think that is going to be pretty typical of our team this year. One guy might get hot, like Juan Dixon or Lonny Baxter, and the other guys get in there and get their double figures. Then the next game it might be someone else [leading the way]. I like the way we are playing offensively right now. It obviously will show next week where we are with our team [with the beginning of ACC play]. At the same time, I think we've approached these last two weeks pretty well in terms of being serious and trying to get things done. We have played pretty serious basketball in games that haven't been very close. We're trying to gain momentum and gain confidence, and I think we have it going into league play. We'll see what happens."

(on Terence Morris)
"I was glad to see him hit all four free throws. He's a very good free throw shooter, so hopefully this will relax him on the free throw line. With Terence it is a gradual thing, it's coming. He played a little better today than the last game. It's the time of year where you need a senior with his ability to step up. I think he is in a position to do that now."

(on readiness for the ACC)
"I think we're ready. We're healthy, with the exception of Tahj Holden. It's going to be interesting because a lot of people have talked a lot about how deep and strong the league is. It looks that way. It's time to play."
