CHARLESTON, S.C.-- - Philip Hartig drove in three runs in his first two at bats, leading The Citadel (1-0) to a 7-2 win over Maryland (0-1) in the first day of action at the Trademark Properties Classic in Charleston, S.C. The host Bulldogs jumped out to a 7-0 lead after three innings and held on for the win.
The Citadel sent eight batters to the plate in the first inning and scored three runs off of Maryland starter Jamie Hammond (0-1). After the first two batters walked, The Citadel got a RBI double from Daryl Byrd, a RBI single from Hartig and a sacrifice fly by Stuart Jordan.
Hartig struck again in the bottom of the second inning, hitting a one-out two-run single as part of a second straight three-run inning. After two innings, the Bulldogs took a commanding 6-0 advantage.
Hammond left the game after three innings, with the Terps down 7-0. Maryland then got solid relief performances from Mark Martin and Matt Basinger, who held the Bulldogs scoreless and surrendered just one hit over the final five innings.
The Terps got on the board in the top of the fourth inning, as Steve Oursler singled home Craig Munroe. Oursler drove home Munroe again in the top of the sixth inning on a standup triple, cutting the Bulldog lead to 7-2.
The Citadel held Maryland scoreless the final three innings to preserve the win.
The Terps face Old Dominion (0-1) tomorrow at 10 a.m. in the second day of action at the Trademark Properties Classic. The Monarchs lost to South Carolina 3-0 earlier today. In the other game, East Carolina defeated NC State 10-2.
