Tim Hummel knocked in four runs, leading Old Dominion (1-1) to a 12-5 win over Maryland (0-2) in the second day of baseball action at the Trademark Properties Classic in Charleston, S.C. Hummell went 2-for-4 with a double and a home run.
Hummell got the Monarchs on the board in the top of the first inning when he belted a solo home run off of Maryland starter Todd Ainsworth. Ainsworth left the game in the top of the second inning after suffering an elbow injury. He was replaced by Steve Schmoll.
Trailing 2-0, the Terps struck back in the bottom of the third inning with three runs. Jason Mohap provided the big blow, as he belted a two-out two-run double to deep center field. Old Dominion, however, responded with four runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 6-3 advantage.
Hummell struck again in the top of the six inning with a three-run double. He then scored on a throwing error by Terps' catcher Brian Barton. With its second four-run inning of the game, Old Dominion took a commanding 11-3 lead with three innings to play.
After Old Dominion tacked on another run in the eighth inning, the Terps got two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning on back-to-back RBI singles by Craig Munroe and Mohap. It wasn't enough, however, as the Monarchs came away with the win.
The Terps take on East Carolina tomorrow at 10 a.m. in the final day of the Trademark Properties Classic.
NOTES: Dating back to last season, Craig Munroe now has a four-game hitting streak ... Chuck Easter tied a career-high with two doubles.
