TAMPA, Fla. - The Maryland softball squad opened the 2000 season by capturing third place at the USF-Louisville Slugger Tournament held Friday through Sunday. Maryland's tournament run came to an end Sunday when the Terrapins suffered a 3-2 loss at the hands of Florida Atlantic. The Terps posted a 3-2 record over the weekend in a tournament that featured eight teams.
Florida Atlantic took an early lead by scoring three runs in the first inning on no hits. The Terps chipped away at the Lady Owl advantage on a bases-loaded RBI single in the second by freshman Jillian Callaway (Brandywine, Md.). Junior Jennifer Potzman (Trexlertown, Pa.) singled in pinch-hitter Holly Baldwin (Olney, Md.) in the seventh inning, but FAU was able to hold on for the victory. Sophomores Kiesha Pickeral (Hughesville, Md.) and Beth Radford (Dunkirk, Md.) accounted for the other Terp base hits. ,p.
