COLLEGE PARK, Md. - University of Maryland women's soccer coach Shannon Higgins-Cirovski announced the signing of three high school seniors to national letters of intent to begin play with the nationally-ranked team in the fall of 2000. Jenny Biscoe (Baltimore, Md./John Carroll H.S.), Katie Ludwig (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape Regional H.S.) and Audra Poulin (Silver Spring, Md./Rockville H.S.) have signed on to wear the red, gold, black and white of Maryland.
"We are really proud of our recruiting class for 2000," said Higgins-Cirovski, who was named ACC Coach of the Year after her first season at Maryland this past fall. "We believe this class will compliment our existing team very well."
Playing both midfield and striker, Biscoe was named the Baltimore Sun Player of the Year after leading John Carroll to the Maryland High School State Championship this past fall. She was named the MVP of the 1999 state championships as well as an all-state player as a junior and senior. She is also a star basketball and lacrosse player in high school.
"Jenny is one of those players who is truly a diamond in the rough," said Higgins-Cirovski. "She didn't play ODP because she's a basketball and lacrosse player as well. In coming here, Jenny is really going to bring some flair to the offense."
Poulin has been a standout at Rockville High School in the midfield. She was named the Washington Post Met Player of the Year this past fall. She also earned NSCAA All-American honors and was an All-South Region honoree. She played for the Bethesda Falcons club team, which won the Maryland state championship from 1993-98. Poulin has been a part of the Maryland ODP team for the past four years.
"Audra is definitely going to help us right away," said Higgins-Cirovski. "She is only beginning to reach her potential and will only get better because of her exceptional technical talent and feel for the game."
Ludwig comes to Maryland after being named an NSCAA All-American and first team all-state this past fall at Lenape Regional High School in New Jersey. This striker has played for the Medford Strikers club team for the past six seasons, captaining the team to back-to-back state championships the past two seasons. She has been a member of the New Jersey State ODP team for the past five years, the Region I Pool for two years and is currently part of the Region I Team.
"Katie is very strong and fast," said the coach. "She is a fighter who will add a bit more offensive punch."
In her first season as the head coach at Maryland in 1999, Higgins-Cirovski led the Terps to an 11-10-1 record and as they advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, in the team's fifth consecutive playoff appearance.
