Baxter Named ACC Player Of The Week
Sophomore Lonny Baxter (Silver Spring, Md.), who averaged 27.5 points,
nine rebounds and 4.5 blocks last week, was named the ACC Player of the
Week on Monday. He scored a career-high 31 points against NC State and
24 against Virginia in leading the Terps to a second place tie in the
ACC with a 5-4 record. Maryland has won five of its last six ACC games
and Baxter has averaged 19.8 points and 7.7 rebounds during that span.
Baxter was sensational as he led the Terps over NC State with a career-high 31 points, a career-high seven blocked shots and 10 rebounds. He also drew a charge on the Wolfpack's Damon Thornton on the biggest play of the game. Maryland trailed 73-68 with less than three minutes remaining in the game and NC State seemed poised to lengthen its lead on a 3-on-1 break. However, as Thornton went for a dunk, Baxter slid into position and Thornton was called for a charge. The Terps outscored the Wolfpack 10-0 from that point to gain the victory. Baxter scored the game-winning basket on a jumper with 1:14 remaining. In the final five minutes of the game he scored six points, grabbed three rebounds and blocked one shot. Earlier in the week, he scored 24 points in leading the Terps past Virginia. He scored 18 second-half points to lead the Terps to the 91-79 victory over the Cavaliers. Baxter's 18 points in the second half allowed Maryland to outscore Virginia, 50-43, and gain the victory. It is the first time he has earned the award.
Baxter In The Last 3
Sophomore Lonny Baxter is averaging 26.3 points, 8.3 rebounds, 3.3
blocked shots and shooting 59.6 percent from the field in the last three
games -- all three of which have been Terp victories.

Getting To The Line
Maryland made a season-high 30 free throws on a season-high 38 attempts
against Virginia on Feb. 2. Maryland's ability to get the ball inside
against Virginia not only allowed sophomore Lonny Baxter to score 24
points but it also put the Terps on the free throw line for 38 shots.
Led by Baxter's six-of-eight (75.0 percent) performance from the line
against the Cavaliers, the Terps shot 78.9 percent (30-of-38). It
marked the second consecutive game that the Terps had shot 70.0 percent
or better from the line. The Terps are ranked fourth in the ACC in free
throw percentage with a 68.9 mark.
From The Free Throw Line
When Maryland gets the ball inside it often gets the ball to sophomore
Lonny Baxter. Baxter often scores (15.0 points per game average) or
gets to the free throw line (106 free throws attempted). His points,
free throws made and free throws attempted are often directly related to
Maryland's success in games. Maryland is 8-0 when it takes more than 25
free throws in a game and 13-0 when it takes more free throws than its
opponent.
