VCU Defeats Maryland Baseball Team 9-6

COLLEGE PARK, MD. - Danny Lopaize went 2-for-5 with a double and a two-run home run, propelling Virginia Commonwealth (14-6) to a 9-6 win over Maryland (3-9) in baseball action at Shipley Field on Friday. The game marked the first of a three-game series between the two squads.

The Rams jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Jason Dubois singled home a run. They then extended the lead to 4-0 with three runs in the top of the second inning.

Maryland got a run back in the bottom of the second when Jason Mohap scored on a fielder's choice by Kevin McDonald. The Rams, however, stretched the lead to 5-1 in the top of the fifth inning when Corey Bauswell singled home Lopaize.

Virginia Commonwealth scored twice more in the top of the sixth inning on back-to-back RBI singles by Matt Davis and Barry Blake.

Mohap led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a solo home run to left field. Sean Lomas then singled home Steve Oursler as the Terps pulled to within 7-3.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Mohap struck again as he singled home Chuck Easter to close the gap to 7-4. Lopaize, however, hit a two-out, two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to give the Rams a 9-4 lead.

The Terps threatened in the bottom of the ninth inning. Easter scored on a sacrifice fly and Oursler singled home Craig Munroe. The Rams, however, held on for the win.

Mark Fisher (3-1) got the win for the Rams. Matt Basinger (0-1) took the loss for the Terps.

The two schools travel to Richmond for a 2 p.m. game on Saturday and a 1 p.m. game on Sunday.

TERP NOTES: Maryland's 15 hits was a season high ... Chuck Easter tied a career-high with four hits in the game ... Jason Mohap tied a career high by hitting safely in his eighth straight game.
