Softball Advances In Championship Bracket At Buzz Classic

MARIETTA, Ga. - The Maryland softball squad (18-14, 2-0 ACC) dealt a 6-3 loss to Florida A&M in the first round of championship bracket play on Saturday at Georgia Tech's Buzz Classic. The Terps, who were 3-1 in pool play with victories over Harvard, Mercer and Coastal Carolina, now move on in the championship rounds to face SW Missouri State, who defeated the Terrapins 14-5 in pool play on Friday. The Bears earned the No. 1 seed in bracket play after posting a 4-0 pool play record.
Maryland sophomore fireballer Amanda Bettker (St. Petersburg, Fla.) (10-6) earned her 10th victory of the season vs. FAMU, striking out six and allowing only five hits in the complete game victory. The Terps found themselves down 2-0 after the Rattlerettes batted in the bottom of the first, but bounced back with a three-run third. Florida A&M put another run across in the fourth inning, but the Terps answered again with two runs in the fifth and one in the seventh to ensure the 6-3 Maryland victory.
Sophomore Beth Radford (Dunkirk, Md.), who has been tremendous at the plate for the Terps, put in a 1-for-3 effort with a solo homer, a walk, two runs scored and one batted in. Freshman Stefanie Robinson (Avenel, N.J.) was 2-for-4 with a RBI, and junior Michelle Burrell (Owego, N.Y.) was 1-for-3 with one run and a RBI. Second baseman Jillian Callaway (Brandywine, Md.) singled twice for the Terps, while Florida A&M's Cherrae Rushton stood out for the Rattlerettes with a 2-for-2 performance that featured two home runs and three RBI.
Maryland and SW Missouri State face off for the second time in three days Sunday in the second round of championship bracket play. The first game between the two schools featured 28 base hits in a match-up that pitted Maryland's Jen Shellhammer against the Bears' Jessica Davis. Game time is 9 a.m. The Buzz Classic semifinals and the championship game will be played at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
