Cleveland State Beats Maryland 13-12 In Baseball Action

COLLEGE PARK, MD. - Cleveland State (2-8) took advantage of seven Terps miscues to hand Maryland (3-6) a heartbreaking 13-12 loss in baseball action today at Shipley Field. The loss ends the Terps' two-game winning streak

Keith Lillash hit a solo home run in the top of the first inning to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead. Cleveland State extended the lead to 3-0 in the second inning on back-to-back RBI singles by Jamie Murphy and Mike Lehman.

Craig Munroe hit a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning to pull the Terps to within 3-1. In the third inning, the Terps tied the score as Larry Long singled home a run and Chuck Easter's ground out knocked in the tying run.

Jason Mohap scored on a throwing error in the fourth inning to give the Terps a 4-3 advantage. The Vikings tied up the score in the top of the fifth inning when Lillash scored on a ground out by Lehman.

Ray Gemmill hit a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to give Maryland a 5-4 lead. Cleveland State, however, reclaimed the lead with two runs in the top of the seventh inning. Lillash singled home Lehman and Matt Smith scored on a throwing error.

The Terps exploded for four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. John McCurdy led off with a solo home run. Brian Patenaude doubled home Long and then scored on a double by Munroe. Easter scored the final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Jason Mohap.

Cleveland State took advantage of two errors by Maryland in the top of the eighth inning to score five unearned runs and take an 11-9 lead. The key miscue came when a grounder by Lillash got by McCurdy, scoring two runs.

After Cleveland State tacked on two more runs in the top of the ninth inning, the Terps pulled to within 13-12 but could not score the tying run.

Maryland and Cleveland State conclude their two-game series Wednesday at 2:30 p.m.
