Maryland Splits A Pair At Speedline Invitational

March 9, 2000

Tampa, Fla. - Sophomore Beth Radford (Dunkirk, Md.) became the latest Terp to go deep and extended her hitting streak to nine games as Maryland (10-7, 0-0 ACC) posted a 1-1 record on the opening day of the Speedline Invitational Tournament. The sophomore catcher belted one homer per game as the Terps shocked No. 18 South Carolina, 4-0, before being edged by Hofstra, 6-5.

Junior right-handed pitcher Jen Shellhammer (Slatington, Pa.) went the distance against the Gamecocks, scattering four hits and mowing down five. The Terrapins took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. With the bases loaded, freshman Samantha Sweeney (Marlton, N.J.) singled, driving in sophomore Kiesha Pickeral (Hughesville, Md.). Junior Jennifer Potzman (Trexlertown, Pa.) then walked with the bases still juiced, scoring freshman Jillian Callaway (Brandywine, Md.).

The Terps weren't finished there, scoring again in their half of the seventh on Radford's 2-run shot to right field, knocking in Potzman. Sweeney finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Pickeral was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Sophomore hurler Amanda Bettker (St. Petersburg, Fla.) (4-2) suffered the loss vs. the Flying Dutchwomen. The right-hander fell victim to a Hofstra four-run third, giving up a three-run gonner to Dutchwoman pitcher Jen Smith. The Terps answered with some fireworks of their own, putting two runs across in the sixth and three more in the seventh courtesy of Radford's second homer of the day --- a 3-run blast over the center field fence. It was not enough, however, as the Terps fell by a 6-5 count.

The Terps are back in action tomorrow in Tampa, taking on Purdue at 10 a.m., followed by a rematch with No. 19 Illinois-Chicago at noon. The Terps first met the Flames on Feb. 20 at the Triangle Classic, where Illinois-Chicago outlasted Maryland, 3-2.
