Kicks Against Breast Cancer Women's Soccer Schedule

April 14, 2000

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - For the fourth year in a row, eight of the best collegiate women's soccer teams in the United States will visit the University of Maryland to participate in the "Kicks Against Breast Cancer Tournament." Combining their efforts with businesses, local soccer organizations, volunteers and paying fans, the women helped raise over $150,000 for Howard County General Hospital's Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource and Image Center in Columbia, Maryland since 1997.

The Kicks Against Breast Cancer Tournament honors the memory of Claudia Mayer, who died of breast cancer at the age of 47 in 1996. Claudia was a soccer enthusiast and a woman who displayed extraordinary courage as she battled the disease that eventually took her life.

Louise Waxler, "Kicks" tournament director, developed the concept in 1997. Waxler has mobilized volunteers from the Howard County General Hospital, Maryland State Youth Soccer Association and several other organizations to help stage the event. At the end of the inaugural competition in 1997, more than $30,000 was raised.
