GREENVILLE, N.C. -
Junior Jen Shellhammer (Slatington, Pa.) was masterful in the second game of a South Atlantic Softball Alliance doubleheader as the Terps and No. 24 East Carolina traded victories on Sunday. The right-handed junior pitcher allowed only one hit as the Maryland softball team (23-22, 3-3 ACC/SASA) took the second game by a 1-0 score. The Maryland victory came after the conference-newcomer Pirates came from behind to beat the Terps, 4-3, in Game 1.
Right-handed pitcher Amanda Bettker (St. Petersburg, Fla.) suffered the defeat in Game 1, tossing her 19th complete game of the season. The sophomore scattered five hits, allowing two earned runs while striking out two. The Terps took a 3-0 lead in the second inning when baserunners Beth Radford (Dunkirk, Md.) and Kiesha Pickeral (Hughesville, Md.) advanced to second and third on a Jillian Callaway (Brandywine, Pa.) sacrifice bunt. Terp catcher Radford was able to scamper home from third on a wild pitch. Outfielders Michelle Burrell (Owego, N.Y.) and Samantha Sweeney (Marlton, N.J.) then walked to load the bases for Annmarie Browne (Lansdale, Pa.), and the junior drove in two runs with a grounder to the left side. The Pirates cut the lead to 3-2 in the third with a two-out rally. ECU went up by the final count in the seventh, leading off with a double and scoring two runs on Terp miscues.
Shellhammer made her first start for the Terps in Game 2 since being sidelined with an arm injury after an appearance on March 24. The junior, who pitched two perfect innings vs. North Carolina on Apr. 14, allowed one base hit, an infield single, through seven innings of work. Only five Pirates reached base and Shellhammer struck out one as the Terps ripped ECU for ten base hits. Maryland scored the contest's only run when Radford singled to left in the top of the third, driving in Sweeney.
Radford, Sweeney, Pickeral and Burrell finished the day's games 2-for-6 (.333.). Radford crossed the plate once in addition to driving in one, and Sweeney, Pickeral and Burrell each scored a run.
The Terps make up a road doubleheader against George Mason on Thursday, Apr. 20, before returning home to host conference opponent Virginia on Saturday, Apr. 22.
