Virginia Beats Maryland Baseball Team 13-10

COLLEGE PARK, MD - Freshman outfielder Ben Himes homered twice and junior catcher John Benick drove in five runs, leading Virginia (21-27-1, 8-12 ACC) to a 13-10 win over Maryland (19-27, 3-14 ACC) in baseball action on Saturday night at Shipley Field. The game marked the second of a three-game ACC series between the two schools.

Maryland got a four-RBI effort from senior designated hitter Craig Munroe and a three-RBI effort from senior outfielder Frank Valois.

Virginia came out strong, scoring three runs in each of the first three innings to jump out to a commanding 9-0 lead. Shortstop Tim LaVigne was hit by a pitch twice and scored twice, and Benick drilled a two-run single in the second inning. In the third inning, the big blow was a solo home run by Himes.

The Terps struck back with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Sophomore center fielder Matt Swope singled in a run and Munroe doubled home a pair of runs, cutting the deficit to 9-3.

Munroe struck again in the bottom of the fifth inning, doubling home a pair of runs to trim the Virginia lead to 9-5. Himes, however, answered back with a two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning, stretching the lead to 11-5. Benick then drilled a two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning, widening the gap to 13-5.

The Terps got five runs back in the final two innings to pull within 13-10. The big blow was a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth by Valois. The Cavaliers, however, were able to hang on for the win.

Junior righthander Ryan Creswell (4-7) got the win while freshman righthander Steve Schmoll (3-3) took the loss.

Maryland and Virginia conclude their series Sunday at 1 p.m.
