
Virginia Beats Maryland Baseball Team 9-5

Luis Giraldo and Tim LaVigne each had three hits, leading Virginia (21-28-1, 9-12 ACC) to a 9-5 win over Maryland (19-28, 3-15 ACC) in baseball action on Sunday afternoon at Shipley Field. The game marked the finale of a three-game ACC series between the two schools.
Virginia jumped on the Terps early, scoring a run in the first inning and four times in the second inning. The Cavaliers then added single runs in the fourth and sixth innings to take a 7-0 lead.
Maryland pulled to within 7-2 when Matt Swope doubled in a run in the sixth inning and Sean Lomas singled in a run in the seventh inning. Virginia, however, extended the lead to 9-2 on a Mark Rueffert two-run single in the top of the eighth inning.
The Terps got three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning on a walk, a wild pitch and a fielder's choice to pull within 9-5, but the Cavaliers held on for the win.
Dan Street (3-0) got the win while Jamie Hammond (4-8) took the loss.
Swope led the Terps with two hits and two RBI.
Maryland hosts Richmond on Tuesday at 7 p.m. while Virginia travels to Virginia Tech on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. game.
