
Maryland Baseball Team Beats Coppin State 16-4

Senior outfielder Frank Valois smacked a three-run home run and had five RBI, leading Maryland to a 16-4 win over Coppin State in baseball action today at Shipley Field. The win was the Terps' second straight and their fourth in the past five games.
Valois was one of four Maryland players to have a two-hit performance against the Eagles. Sophomore outfielder Matt Swope, senior first baseman Craig Munroe and junior designated hitter Chuck Easter also had a pair of hits.
Junior outfielder Brian Patenaude scored four times and extended his career-high and team-leading hitting streak to 12 games. Senior outfielder Larry Long scored twice and recorded his 59th career steal, tying the school record held by former Terp Todd Nutter (1990-93).
Junior second baseman Roberto Sanchez led Coppin State with three hits, including two doubles, and scored a run.
Freshman Steve Schmoll (1-0) pitched five innings, allowed only one run on four hits and struck out a career-high nine batters to get the win. Stan Alston (1-5) took the loss for Coppin State.
Maryland hosts Georgia Tech on Friday at 3 p.m. as part of an ACC three-game series. Coppin State hosts Norfolk State on Thursday at 1 p.m.
