COLLEGE PARK, MD. -
Senior catcher Brian Barton, junior shortstop Sean Lomas and senior center fielder Larry Long all homered, leading Maryland (24-32, 7-17 ACC) to an 11-3 win over Duke (16-39, 5-19 ACC) in ACC baseball action on Saturday at Shipley Field. The game marked the regular season finale for both teams.
With the win, the Terps took their third ACC series of the year, marking the first time that they have taken three conference series in a season since the ACC went to a three-game format in 1991. The Terps also won their second straight three-game ACC series for the first time ever.
Senior designated hitter Craig Munroe keyed a two-run second inning as he led off the inning with a double. He later scored on a wild pitch. Sophomore shortstop Kevin Kelly of Duke cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the third inning on a RBI single.
Barton gave the Terps a 3-1 lead with a solo home run to left field in the bottom of the fourth inning. Senior third baseman Jeff Becker of Duke, however, drilled a solo blast of his own in the top of the fifth inning, cutting the gap to 3-2.
Maryland blew the game open with four runs in the fifth inning extending the lead to 7-2. Lomas led the way with his home run (his second in as many games). The Terps were also aided by a pair of Blue Devil errors in the inning.
Sophomore shortstop Kevin Kelly of Duke scored on a ground out in the top of the seventh inning, making the score 7-3.
Maryland then reeled off four straight runs to seal the win. With his two-run home run in the eighth inning, Long scored his 158th career run, tying the all-time record set by former Terp Chris Cannan (1991-94).
Freshman righthander Steve Schmoll (5-4) pitched a career-high 6.1 innings to get the win. Senior lefthander Steve Schroeder (3-8) took the loss.
The two schools will meet in the play-in game of the ACC Tournament on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in Charlotte, N.C.
TERP NOTES: The three home runs in a game tied the Terps' season-high ... Barton's three hits tied his career high.
