TRENTON, N.J. -- No. 1 Maryland completed its 2000 season the way it had finished the past fiveseasons- by winning the national championship. The Terrapins used a 13-goal second half to down Princeton 16-8 when the final horn sounded. Tournament MVP Jen Adams (Marino, South Australia) scored an NCAA Tournament record 10 points (five goals, five assists) for the Terps- all in the second half.
Maryland opened the scoring with a free position goal from sophomore Courtney Hobbs (West Lakes, South Australia), but would enter the half down 4-3 after a late Princeton goal by Julie Shaner with four seconds remaining in the half.
The Terps came out on fire in the second half, scoring three goals in the opening five minutes, including one by Hobbs just 20 seconds into the half. Maryland outscored the Tigers 13-4 the second half, including Adams' 10 points. With her tournament performance, Adams broke the record for points in a single-season in Division I lacrosse totaling 136 points this season.
"A small spark starts a big fire and our second half was really a small spark,? said Adams about the turnaround the Terps made in the final half. "Maybe we just weren't as composed in the first half as we were in the second half, but a couple of goals quickly can change the game around. "
Maryland's national title was its sixth straight, which is the longest active streak of national championships in Division I women's athletics. The Terrapins increased their winning streak to 20 straight this year, and captured its 49th consecutive non-conference victory. TheTerrapins also broke the record for most goals in a half in a championship game with 13. The previous record was 11, set by Maryland in 1999 against Virginia.
