In what has been an amazing week for 2000 NCAA Tournament MVP Jen Adams (Marino, South Australia), the junior attack has now been chosen as the recipient of the first-ever Honda Award for women's lacrosse. The Australia native helped the Terrapins to their sixth straight NCAA championship on May 21, when Maryland downed runner-up Princeton 16-8 for the title. Adams scored 10 goals and seven assists during last weekend's 2000 national championship run. She also set the Division I record for most points in an NCAA tournament game when she scored 10 points against Princeton- all in the second half. The Terrapins' championship title streak is the longest active streak in Division I women's athletics.
Adams finished the 2000 season with 81 goals and 55 assists for an NCAA Division I record 136 points this season. Only a junior, Adams shattered the Maryland single-season marks for goals, assists and points and will begin the 2001 season with 179 career goals, 118 career assists, and 297 career points. Entering her senior year, she is just eight goals away from Kelly Amonte's all-time goals record of 187 at Maryland. Adams is also 14 assists away from topping Amonte for career assists, as well as 22 points from Amonte's career record 319 points.
The 12 Honda Award winners are automatically candidates for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year, which receives the Honda-Broderick Cup. On June 12, 2000 during the annual NACDA convention, a banquet will be held to name the Honda-Broderick Cup winner, as well as to honor the winners of the 12 Honda Sports Awards, the Inspiration Award, and the Division II and III Athletes of the Year. The winner of the Collegiate Women Athlete of the Year is determined through the distribution of ballots to all NCAA athletic directors. The awards program is sponsored by American Honda Motor Co., Inc.
The Honda Award is the fourth honor Adams has received this week. She was named to the 2000 GTE Academic All-District II spring women's at-large team Thursday, received first-team Brine/IWLCA All-American status on Monday, and was named the Warrior/Inside Lacrosse Player of the Week on Tuesday. At the ACC Tournament, Adams was honored as the 2000 ACC Player of the Year, as well as earning ACC Tournament MVP honors. She was also named ACC Player of the Week twice this season.
