NC State Beats Maryland Baseball Team 5-4

NC State (28-25, 10-13 ACC) scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to beat Maryland (21-30, 4-16 ACC) in baseball action on Saturday at Shipley Field. The game, which marked the second of a three-game series between the two schools, was televised live by Fox Sports South.

Freshman designated hitter Mike Prochaska got the Wolfpack on the board in the top of the first inning on a RBI double, but the Terps evened the score in the bottom of the first inning on a RBI single by junior first baseman Chuck Easter.

Sophomore catcher Kevin McDonald put the Terps in the lead on a RBI single in the second inning and junior left fielder Brian Patenaude homered in the third inning, increasing the lead to 3-1. Sophomore catcher Dan Mooney, however, cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the fourth inning on a solo home run.

Sophomore center fielder Matt Swope singled home Patenaude in the fifth inning, extending the lead to 4-2. The Wolfpack, however, came back in the seventh inning and scored three times. Senior center fielder Josh Schmitt and and freshman first baseman Adam Innis had back-to-back RBI doubles, and senior right fielder Craig Lee knocked in the go-ahead run on a single.

Prochaska (4-4), who took over the pitching duties in the sixth inning and went 3.0 innings, got the win while junior Mark Martin (2-5) took the loss. Junior Josh Miller got his second save of the season.

The two schools conclude their series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
