Junior shortstop Sean Lomas hit two home runs, leading Maryland (22-30, 5-16 ACC) to a 13-3 win over NC State (28-26, 10-14 ACC) in baseball action on Sunday at Shipley Field. The two home runs and five RBI were both career highs for Lomas.
With the win, the Terps take the three-game ACC series from the Wolfpack 2 games to 1. It marks the first time that Maryland has taken a three-game series from the Wolfpack since 1992.
NC State took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Freshman first baseman Adam Innis hit a solo home run and senior shortstop Jason Smith scored on a wild pitch. For Innis, it was his first collegiate home run.
Lomas launched a three-run home run in the bottom of the second inning, giving the Terps a 3-2 lead. With the Terps up 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Lomas struck again, belting a two-run home run to left field, extending the lead to 6-2.
Maryland took advantage of a pair of Wolfpack errors in the bottom of the seventh inning, extending the lead to 9-2. Senior catcher Dan Mooney, however, cut the lead to 9-3 in the top of the eighth inning with a solo run.
The Terps iced the game with four more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to extend the lead to 13-3. Junior third baseman Steve Oursler, who extended his team-leading hitting streak to eight games, led the way with a RBI double.
Senior left-handed pitcher Jamie Hammond (5-8) went 8.0 innings and got the win while Ryan Combs (5-5) took the loss.
Maryland hosts George Washington on Tuesday at 7 p.m. while NC State hosts Liberty on Friday at 7 p.m.
