COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- No. 23 Maryland travels to California for the second consecutive season to compete in one of the nation's top tournaments, the Stanford Nike Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. Last year, Maryland played at the USC/FILA Challenge, where they battled USC and UCLA.
The Terps will take on a pair of teams ranked in the top 20 in every soccer poll. Maryland will face No. 19 Santa Clara in the opening game of the invitational at 5 p.m. (PT) on Friday, Sept. 15. That game will be followed by No. 15 Virginia against host No. 6 Stanford at 7:30 p.m.
On Sunday, Maryland will challenge host Stanford in the finale of the invite on Sunday at 1 p.m. (PT). That game will be preceded by the Virginia-Santa Clara match at 11 a.m.
"This is one of the nation's premier tournaments," said Maryland head coach Shannon Higgins-Cirovski. "These are four of the top programs coming together for a great event at Stanford."

Nelson Nets First Career Hat Trick
Senior forward Julie Nelson (McLean, Va.) tallied her first career hat trick to lead Maryland to a 3-0 victory over George Washington in its last game on Tuesday night at Ludwig Field. Nelson opened the scoring at the 29:47 mark off a cross from Audra Poulin (Silver Spring, Md.). She scored her second goal off another pass from Poulin at the 51:17 mark and completed the trick 10 minutes later at 61:17 with a successful penalty kick.
With the three-goal performance, Nelson tied Sara Gustafson (Reisterstown, Md.) atop the Maryland scoring chart with three goals for six points. Gustafson pulled off a similar feat as she posted a hat trick in Maryland's upset of No. 4 Penn State on Aug. 29.
Nelson will be featured on the "ACC Live" television show on Monday, Sept. 18. The show airs at 7 p.m. on Home Team Sports (HTS).
Serrins Returns Home Nearing Shutout Mark
Senior keeper Riki-Ann Serrins (Mission Viejo, Calif.) returns to her home state during the soccer season for the second consecutive year, playing against UCLA in 1999 in the USC/FILA Challenge. Having played at 540 minutes this season, Serrins has posted an awesome 0.67 goals against average while recording three shutouts. With her whitewash against George Washington, Serrins moved up the career shutouts list with her 11th. She is currently one short of tying Heather Rowe (1988-91) and Missy Price (1993-96) for the all-time career shutout record with 12.
Serrins has also lowered her career goals against average to 1.24, allowing 44 goals in 3,193 minutes over 45 games in goal. Her career GAA is third all-time at Maryland and just 0.02 behind Price's second-place mark. She also ranks on the all-time saves list with 151.
Teammate Ali Wolff (Richmond, Va.), who is redshirting the 2000 season also ranks in the top five on all three lists.

Records & Rankings
Maryland enters the Stanford Nike Invitational with a 4-2-0 record after winning at Rutgers (1-0), upsetting No. 4 Penn State (3-1), defeating Towson (1-0) and blanking George Washington (3-0). The Terps' losses have come against No. 22 Duke (2-1) and Richmond (1-0). Last season, Maryland was 11-10-1 and 4-2-1 in the ACC as it finished the season ranked No. 23 in the final NSCAA poll. The Terps advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth straight year before losing to national semifinalists Penn State, 3-2 in the second round.
The Terps fell from No. 9 on Sept. 4 in the NSCAA poll to No. 23 in the Sept. 11 poll. In the other polls of Sept. 11, the Terps were ranked No. 18 in the American Soccer Writers poll, No. 21 by Soccer Buzz, No. 22 by SoccerTimes.com, and not ranked in the top 20 by Soccer America.
Santa Clara is 3-2 this season after defeating Cal-Poly SLO (2-1), Oregon (6-0) and upsetting then-No. 6 Connecticut (2-1 in OT) last Sunday. The Broncos' losses have come to Washington (2-1) and No. 2 Notre Dame (6-1).
The Broncos are ranked in all five polls: No. 19 by the NSCAA, No. 5 by the American Soccer Writers, No. 7 by SoccerTimes.com, No. 10 by Soccer America and No. 17 by Soccer Buzz.
Stanford is 3-1 after posting win against St. Mary's (4-0), Wisconsin (2-0) and Connecticut (3-0). The Cardinal's lone loss came against No. 2 Notre Dame (2-1 in OT) also on Sunday at the Notre Dame Tournament.
The Cardinal has been ranked among the top 10 all season by the NSCAA and is currently No. 6. In the other polls of Sept. 11, it is ranked No. 4 by Soccer America, No. 5 by SoccerTimes.com, No. 7 by Soccer Buzz and No. 11 by the American Soccer Writers.
Series Histories
Maryland has faced Santa Clara one previous time and the Broncos defeated the Terps 1-0 on Oct. 3, 1997. The game was played in Fairfax, Va as part of the George Mason Tournament.
Maryland keeper Riki-Ann Serrins made eight saves for the Terps in the loss.
Sunday's game between Maryland and Stanford will be the first match between the two schools in women's soccer.
Playing Out West
The trip will be Maryland's second to California. Over the past five years, Maryland has played out west in Portland, Ore., in 1995, Honolulu, Hawaii in 1996, Boulder, Colo., in 1998 and Los Angeles in 1999. In those seven games, Maryland has a 4-3 record, winning both games at Hawaii and Colorado.
The Terps lost both games at the USC/FILA Challenge in Los Angeles in 1999, falling to host USC, 3-0 on Sept. 4 and UCLA 1-0 on Sept. 6
Biscoe Lost For Year
Maryland freshman midfielder Jen Biscoe (Baltimore, Md.) had a week of highs and lows as she scored her first collegiate goal against Towson, but tore the ACL in her right knee in the team's loss at Richmond.
Biscoe tallied her first goal to lift the Terps to a 1-0 win over local rival Towson on Sept. 6. The goal came as Biscoe took a cross from sophomore Carly Viher (Mentor, Ohio) with deposited the ball into the lower left corner of the goal with her left foot at the 40:51 mark.
Against Richmond, Biscoe went down with the right knee injury in the 25th minute of the game and didn't return. After an MRI on Monday Sept. 11, it was determined Biscoe has a torn ACL and will miss the rest of the 2000 season.
Poulin Steps In For Roommate
With her fellow freshman teammate and dorm roommate Jen Biscoe sidelined for the remainder of the 2000 season, Audra Poulin has replaced her in the starting lineup.
In her first start, Poulin had a sensational game setting up Julie Nelson's first two goals to record her first two college assists.
"I definitely felt a lot of pressure replacing Jen, who is incredible," Poulin said. "I felt bad replacing Jen as if she should have been out there instead. Usually when I'm put in a position like that I choke but this gave me a lot of added confidence."
Both Poulin and Biscoe highlight a freshman class that was touted by many publications as one of the nation's best entering the season. Biscoe earned Baltimore Sun Player of the Year honors in 1999 as a senior at John Carroll High in Bel Air, Md., while Poulin, a NSCAA All-American, was voted Washington Post All-Met Player of the Year as a senior at Rockville High School.
Ludwig Assists At Ludwig
Another member of the decorated freshman class Katie Ludwig (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) posted her first college point against George Washington. Ludwig found Audra Poulin, who crossed the ball to Julie Nelson for the Terps' second goal in the 3-0 win over Colonials.
Ludwig is the first player to play and now score a point at Ludwig Field, which was constructed in 1995.
Getting Time
Many members of the Terps saw significant action against George Washington, for the first time this season. Junior Debbie Lieberman (Commack, N.Y.) played the final 60 minutes and defensive midfield and took her first two shots of the season. Sophomore defender Katie Kruse (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) played 28 solid minutes and made a key defensive stop in the final seconds to preserve the shutout.
Sophomore transfer Sarah McClellan (Bowie, Md.) and freshman Jennifer Lovecchio (Vineland, N.J.) made their Maryland debuts in the win over GW as they played the final seven minutes.
Viher Veers Into Points Column
Sophomore Carly Viher is third on the team in points with four (one goal and two assists). As a freshman Viher started all 22 games, but did not record a point. In 2000, she has taken a more offensive role from the backline this season.
Viher registered her first college goal in the season-opening win over Rutgers on Aug. 25.
She continued the offense in her second game of 2000, as she picked up her first college assist on Sara Gustafson's first goal of the 3-1 win over Penn State. Viher fed a soft cross to Gustafson, who beat Penn State keeper Emily Oleksiuk in the low right corner.
Viher posted her second assist in the win over Towson on Sept. 6.
Home Sweet Home
Maryland has made a habit of winning at Ludwig Field. The Terps hold a 45-14-3 record all-time in games played at Ludwig, dating to its construction in 1995. They have won 75.0 percent of the games in College Park. Maryland has won five straight non-conference games at Ludwig and seven of the last nine, overall.
Playing The Best
Of the Terps 18 regular-season opponents, 12 have been ranked in the NSCAA Top 25 at one point this season. For the week of Sept. 11, 10 of the Terps opponents are ranked including five in the top 10: No. 1 North Carolina, No. 4 Clemson, No. 6 Stanford, No. 7 Duke and No. 8t Penn State.
Wins Against Ranked Teams
The Terps picked up their first-ever win against a team ranked in the top five when they beat No. 4 Penn State on Aug. 29, 3-1. Previously, Maryland's only favorable result against a top-five team was a tie against then-No. 4 Connecticut when it battled to a 2-2 tie on Oct. 11, 1998.
All-time, Maryland has recorded 27 wins in program history against teams ranked in the Top 25, including four last season.
In 1999, then-unranked Maryland upset No. 9 Duke on Sept. 18 (4-3 in OT), No. 9 Clemson on Oct. 17 (2-1 in OT), No. 11 Wake Forest on Oct. 22 (1-0) and No. 21 Duke in the ACC Quarterfinals on Nov. 4 (2-1).
Over the past five years, dating to 1995, Maryland has picked up 23 wins against top 25 teams. Prior to the win over Penn State, the highest ranked team that Maryland has ever upset was then-No. 7 Duke, when the Terps topped the Blue Devils, 2-1 in College Park on Oct. 1, 1995. Maryland has picked up seven other wins against top-10 teams and that tie against UConn in 1998.
