Notes
Maryland Coach Gary Williams
(on what turned the game in UNC's favor)
"The start of the second half was the game basically. We did a good job controlling things the first half. I thought we played relatively well -- missed some shots that maybe we've been making, but that's going to happen some nights. You can't get upset about that."
"We came out the first ten minutes [of the second half] and lacked some of the defensive intensity that we had in the first half and they had more open looks. They made some shots obviously but they did have more open looks, too."
(on the Tar Heel's three-point shooting)
"They hurt us on the three-point line. We gambled a little bit off of [Curry] and he made a couple."
(on his feelings about the game)
"It's very disappointing for me. I thought we were in a great position to win this game and we just didn't have the energy the first eight minutes of the second half. I thought we could win the game, even down 17, 18."
(on what this loss mean's to his team)
"I told the players after the game that one game isn't going to determine our success or lack of success in the ACC. It's just the way it is this year. You don't want to lose at home, but we did, and now we have to go make up for that somewhere. This is a tough loss but at the same time if we were to have a great win and then go down and lose at Florida State. It's too early - it's our third league game."
North Carolina Coach Matt Doherty
(on winning at Cole Field House)
"I really don't know what to say except I though we were fortunate to win. We shot the ball well and I told someone before the game that you have to perform well. You can have your mind into it, your body into it and be emotionally ready to play but when it comes down to it you have to perform. It is like a Broadway play, you have to make shots and I thought in the second half we made shots. We performed well in the second half and we are fortunate to come out of here with a win. We know how tough of a place this place is and coach Williams has a very talented team."
(on the Carolina run to start the second half)
"It was almost too much too soon. You start looking at the clock and it's not running. We would get fouled and miss some foul shots and Maryland would come down and score. Fortunately, we ran out of time."
(on getting shots down low early in the first half)
"We were getting down to the low post and we were just not getting it in. I thought we needed to be a little stronger with the basketball because they stripped us a few times. In the second half, getting Baxter in foul trouble was a big help to us."
(on the performance of Ronald Curry and the Carolina ball movement)
"Ronald had seven assists and I thought he did a really good job once he broke the press. He made some really good decisions and got us some good shots ... Once we would throw it into Brendan we would get good shots."
