
Six Former Terps Taken In Inaugural Major League Lacrosse Draft

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Six former Terp men's lacrosse players were selected in the first-ever Major League Lacrosse draft held in Philadelphia on Jan. 12, 2001. The outdoor league will debut in mid-June and continue through August with six teams in the inaugural 2001 season.
1995 NCAA Tournament MVP Brian Dougherty (with Maryland 1993-96) was the highest Maryland alum selected as he was taken by Rochester in the second round with the seventh overall pick. He was named a first team All-American in 1995 and 1996 and leading the Terps to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances. Dougherty, who was All-ACC in 1995 and 1996, ranks second all-time in career save percentage at Maryland (.625).
Brian Reese (1995-98), who is currently playing for the indoor National Lacrosse League's Washington Power, was taken by the Baltimore franchise in the fifth round (25th overall). Reese currently has six assists in five games with the Power. He has played with the NLL's Baltimore Thunder and Pittsburgh Crossfire over the last three seasons since finishing his career at Maryland in 1998.
Casey Connor (1997-2000), who is also playing for the NLL's Power, was taken in the 10th round by Rochester (55th overall). Connor, who has one goal and four assists with Power before suffering a shoulder injury, was a second team USILA All-American in 2000.
Another member of the Power Kip Fulks (1992-95) was taken by Baltimore in the 10th round (57th overall). Fulks was a second team USILA All-American in 1995 and All-ACC in 1994 and 1995.
Jeff Shirk (1997-2000) was taken by New Jersey in the 15th round (89th overall). Shirk is currently on the roster of the NLL's Philadelphia Wings. He was named the nation's hardest hitter by the Baltimore Sun in 1999.
Andrew Whipple (1995-98) was the final selection of the MLL draft in the 17th round (102nd overall) by Rochester. Whipple is currently on the roster of the NLL's Rochester Knighthawks. Whipple is Maryland's eighth all-time leading scorer with 190 points during his four-year career from 1995-98. He ranks seventh in career assists with 97. The Rochester, N.Y., native helped the Terps to three national championship games in 1995, 1997 and 1998. He was a third team USILA All-American in 1998.
