Postgame Quotes -- Maryland Versus Duke

Jan. 27, 2001

Recap| Box Score| Notes

Maryland Coach Gary Williams

Opening remarks:
"I thought we did some really good things in terms of trying to win the game -- in terms of holding their shooting percentage down to a decent level -- both their three-pointers and overall shooting percentage. We really took it to the glass with them, which was a good sign. We shot a good field goal percentage. They just shot 42 free throws and we shot 28. In an overtime game that makes a big difference, and I guess we just didn't take it to the glass hard enough to get to the line more."

(on the play of the Maryland reserves)
"I thought a lot of guys on our bench came out and did a great job for us -- Danny Miller, Mike Mardesich really played great. Tahj Holden was really a force out there."

(on his feelings after the game)
"It's very disappointing, but as I said before the game. I've been here before. But don't let this take you away from your next nine ACC games. The test of us as to whether we're a good team will be how ready we get to play Virginia on Wednesday because that's going to be a very difficult game."

(on Duke's basket to end the first half)
"It was an amazing break at the end of the first half. Instead of being up 11 we're up nine and the game goes into overtime. A lot of things happen out there in a game like that."

(on the Terps' first half defense)
"We were really good. We got into some foul trouble even in the first half. We had to shift, we had to play offense and defense because we had three guys with two fouls at halftime."

Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski

(on the outcome of the game)
"It was an amazing game for us. We were down 10 in the last minute but we just hung in there. We were fortunate that they missed some free throws but they played a marvelous game. Maryland is superb and we just had to keep hanging in there. I thought Maryland played outstanding basketball and it was one of those games where you just keep hanging in there."

(on the depth of Maryland and Duke's ability to get to the foul line)
"Maryland was fresher than we were. Us being able to penetrate and get to the free throw line, I thought, was what helped us in a couple of ways. It certainly put points on the board but it also gave us an opportunity to rest for the defensive exchange."

(on the play of Maryland)
"Maryland was great. It looked like they had contributions from everyone. Holden is so good and I love Dixon. They were all good and we feel very fortunate to win."
