Terps Face NC State This Sunday In Raleigh

Oct. 26, 2001

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - * On Sunday, the Terps face ACC rival, NC State with revenge on the mind. Last season, the Wolfpack upset Maryland, 1-0 on Oct. 1 at Ludwig Field. Maryland is 8-4-2 overall and 2-3 in the ACC with a clutch win over then--No. 8 Clemson on Oct. 13. Maryland is 3-0-1 in its last four games.

* Overall, the Wolfpack is 7-7, but is winless in the ACC at 0-5 coming off a 1-0 loss to Duke on Wednesday night.

Terps Eye NCAA Bid

* With its wins over William & Mary and Rutgers, Maryland has nearly assured itself of an NCAA Tournament bid. It would be the Terps' sixth bid in seven years. Coach Shannon Higgins-Cirovski feels strongly about the Terps chances with the field expanded to 64 teams in 2001. "I feel very good about our chances to get into the NCAA Tournament now," she said over the Rutgers match. "I think with this win (Rutgers), the win over William & Mary, the win over Clemson and even though Duke's not doing well, I think that's a good win. Most people still consider it a good win. The strength of our schedule, I think they'll consider that. And I think it solidifies, unless we go on an absolute landslide, it solidifies that we are going to stay in the top five in our region."

Biscoe Nets Game-Winner Again In OT Victory Over Rutgers

* Maryland continued it winning ways in the Mid-Atlantic region as it topped Rutgers, 3-2 in overtime as Jen Biscoe (Baltimore, Md.) scored her second straight game-winning goal. Biscoe scored on a header off a corner kick from Jenny Boyd (Herndon, Va.) at the 100:04 mark to give the Terps the dramatic win.

* Rutgers had rallied back from one-goal deficits on two occasions, scoring with roughly three minutes left in each half to tie the game at 1-1 and 2-2.

* The Terps' first goal came from Audra Poulin (Silver Spring, Md.), who scored from five yards out off a pass from Dana Jarzyniecki (Rochester, N.Y.). Maryland's other goal came from Courtney Beirne (Westminster, Md.) on a header off a cross from Kim King (Media, Pa.),. Jarzyniecki was also credited with an assist on the goal.

Maryland Picks Up Key Regional Win At William & Mary

* The Terps scored an important regional win at William & Mary this last Sunday with a 2-1 win at Barksdale Field. The win knocked the Tribe below .500 and moved the Terps to three games above .500. Jen Biscoe scored the game-winner as she headed home a header pass from Jenny Boyd on a played started with a Lindsay Givens (Downingtown, Pa.) in the 59th minute. The Terps had taken a 1-0 lead in a goal by Courtney Beirne in the 17th minute. Boyd and Givens also assisted on that tally.

* The win was Maryland's first over William & Mary since 1995 and first-ever in Williamsburg.

* Senior keeper Ali Wolff (Richmond, Va.) made four saves for the win, her seventh of the year -- but the first not via a shutout.

The Maryland-NC State Series

* The Maryland-NC State series dates back to the start of the Terps' varsity program in 1987. All-time the Wolfpack holds a 9-3-4 lead in the series, but many of those wins came prior to 1995 when Maryland had a fledgling program.

* Over the last seven meetings, the Terps hold a 3-2-2 lead.

* NC State won last year's match at Ludwig Field, 1-0 on Oct. 1.

* The teams tied the last game at Method Road on Sept, 18, 1999 as Ali Wolff made 10 saves in a scoreless tie.

Senior Day Set For Oct. 30

* Senior Day will take place at the Terps' regular-season home finale on Oct. 30 against Mount St. Mary's. Maryland will recognize and honor seniors Courtney Beirne (Westminster, Md.), Jenny Boyd (Herndon, Va.), Sara Gustafson (Reisterstown, Md.), Debbie Lieberman (Commack, N.Y.) and Ali Wolff (Richmond, Va.).
