Maryland Tennis Moves Ahead At Regionals

Philadelphia, Pa. -- The University of Maryland women's tennis team participated in day one of the 2001Omni Hotels Eastern Region Championships hosted by the University of Pennsylvania, Oct. 27-30. The team was represented by senior Pam Floro(Manila, Philippines), junior Delila Causevic (Silver Spring, Md.) and sophomore Emily Marker (Ann Arbor, Mich.). All three athletes are in the main singles draw while Causevic and Marker are playing doubles as well.
Floro defeated qualifier, Marshall's Megan Skalsky, 6-2, 6-3 and will move on to play Richmond's Jeannette Cluskey. Both Causevic and Marker had first round byes. Marker will face Yale's Andrea Goldberg on Sunday and Causevic will play against Yale's Susie Hiniker. On the doubles end, Causevic and Marker defeated Bucknell's team of Berthod and Diers, 8-0 but were knocked out of the main draw by Old Dominion's Lara Van Rooyen and Patricia Araujo, 8-4.
Top women's players from the 58 eastern region colleges are participating in the indoor championships. The tournament will be using an experimental games scoring system called "Collegiate Game Scoring." CGS allows one deuce when the score is 3-3 or 40-40. Under CGS, each game is won by the player who reaches four points with a margin of at least two points (4-0, 4-2, 5-3, 5-4) over her opponent.

Delila Causevic (MD) received a first round bye.
Emily Marker (MD) received a first round bye.
Doubles Scores:
Causevic/Marker (MD) def. Berthod/Diers (Bucknell) 8-0.
Van Rooyen/Araujo (Old Dominion) def. Causevic/Marker (MD) 8-4.
