Tennis Team Thins In Numbers At Regionals

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The University of Maryland women's tennis team earned three victories and dropped two matches on day two of the 2001 Omni Hotels Eastern Region Championships. Senior Pamela Floro (Manila, Philippines) and sophomore Emily Marker (Ann Arbor, Mich.) were ousted from the tournament, leaving junior Delila Causevic (Silver Spring, Md.) as the only Terrapin still in contention at the regionals.
Causevic defeated two Ivy Leaguers, Yale's Susie Hiniker, 6-3, 6-2 and then Dartmouth's Sarita Yardi 7-6 (0), 6-1. Causevic will now face Harvard's Susanna Lingman in the main singles draw. Teammate Marker, defeated Yale's Andrea Goldberg 7-5, 6-2, but was handed a 6-4, 6-4 loss by Harvard's Alexis Martire. Richmond's Jeannette Cluskey ousted Floro, 6-1, 6-1.
The singles finalists will advance to the 2001 Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, held November 8-11 in Texas. Originally played in February, this event is the second of three national collegiate tennis championships for the 2001-02 season.
Formerly known as the Rolex Regional Championships and ITA Regionals, the Omni Hotels Regionals Championships date back to 1981, featuring the top tennis players from each of the ITA's regions at the NCAA Division I level. The University of Pennsylvania is hosting the 2001 Omni Hotels Eastern Region Tennis Championships for the second time in four years.
