Maryland Women's Tennis Team Concludes Regional Competition

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The University of Maryland women's tennis team was well represented at the 2001 Omni Hotels Eastern Region Championships by senior Pam Floro(Manila, Philippines), junior Delila Causevic (Silver Spring, Md.) and sophomore Emily Marker (Ann Arbor, Mich.) Floro and Marker made it to the second and third rounds in the respective draws, and Causevic fell in the semifinals.
Causevic defeated Harvard's Susanna Lingman in the fourth round, 6-1, 7-6(4). In the quarterfinals, Causevic handed Old Dominion's Nataly Cahana a 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 loss in a three set battle. Cahana was the tournament No. 1 seed and she ranks at No. 4 in the nation. However, Harvard's Courtney Bergman halted Causevic's run in the semifinals, downing her 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-1 and went on to win the tournament by defeating Pennsylvania's Alice Pirsu 7-5, 6-1.
The two finalists will advance to the 2001 Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships held Nov. 8-11 at the Brookhaven Country Club, in Farmers Branch, Texas. Originally played in February, this event is the second of three national collegiate tennis championships for the 2001-02 season.
The 2001 Omni Regionals was Causevic's first regional tournament appearance. The Terrapins conclude their fall schedule and will focus on conditioning and individual workouts through December. Maryland kicks off its spring season against West Virginia on Feb. 2.
