COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Postgame comments from Maryland men's basketball coach Gary Williams.
On the game:
"When we're playing with the intensity we had in the second half we're a good basketball team, but like all teams, you have to play [at that intensity level]. We're just like everybody else. We didn't do that in the first half. We were up 11, but that didn't matter. I wasn't worried about what the score was, I wanted to see how we'd come out."
"You are trying to get some things out of these games and hopefully we learned that there has to be a certain intensity level if we expect to be as good as we want to be. At halftime we realized what it was going to take to pull away, and it was good to see some guys really get going in the second half."
"It was a good practice tonight. It's great to go against different faces... Anytime we play in front of people it's much better than practicing because the adrenaline gets flowing a little bit.
On playing an exhibition game after the intensity of the IKON Classic:
"It's a tough situation coming out of the [Madison Square] Garden. It was pretty tough up there for two days and then to come back and play tonight - it took us a while to get going, which we can't afford to do during the regular season."
On Maryland's upcoming home opener against American:
"It's where I started. They were nice enough to give my first head coaching job in 1977. I have a lot of feelings about that place. It's always a good game for me playing there, plus they have a good coach in Jeff Jones, who coached at Virginia.
