Notes
Maryland Head Coach Gary Williams
Opening statement:
"In the first half we were a little flat. It was good to see that we picked it up at halftime and played at our defensive level. That first half Monmouth did a very good job. I thought Steve Blake played well against Rashaan Johnson. He made him work for everything he got. But we didn't do a good job of recovering ... we didn't have the effort to get back out on their shooters. When we're flat it hurts us offensively too. We just didn't seem very aggressive on the offensive end of the court."
On Maryland's play in the second half:
"In the second half we did play better. This is a good win to have going into exams."
On the play of Chris Wilcox:
"Chris had 13 rebounds. The problem with television is that you won't see one Chris rebound on the news tonight. Do you know what you're going to see? Those two missed dunks. That's not a good message to send out to our young people. "
On Monmouth's team play:
"They are a good team. They played Seton Hall, they played Vanderbilt. They've been around."
On Andre Collins:
"He shot at will. Andre has been working on his ball handling. He's working on his defense. He's a great shooter -- there's no question about his ability to shoot. But there's a lot more to it than that. He's got two guys in front of him with a lot of experience, but he's playing a lot this year... It's great to see guys develop in the program, like Lonny Baxter. Hopefully Andre will be at the level of Lonny Baxter as a senior. "
Monmouth Head Coach Dave Calloway
Opening statement:
"I thought we obviously did a decent job in the first half. I think they still scored a little too easily and we need to do a better job defensively. It might have been easier if it was a lower scoring game. That way when you make a run in the second half you're not down 20 to 25 points but instead you're only down by 10. Obviously they are third [second] in the country, and a Final Four team last year. This was just a good opportunity for Monmouth to be associated with a team like Maryland."
On his team's performance:
"I think I'm most disappointed in the breakdowns. We broke down and obviously Maryland had a lot to do with that. We have to deal with the game and not break down, but we play these games to learn."
On Lonny Baxter:
"Obviously our goal was to stop Baxter. We watched the Princeton tape and also played them on Saturday. We played similar to Princeton in spreading it and getting some back door stuff."
