Maryland vs. William & Mary: Postgame Quotes

Dec. 27, 2001

Recap| Final Stats| Notes

Maryland Head Coach Gary Williams
Opening statement:
"The game was very physical. I like the way we sustained our effort physically. We did some good things and it felt good to be playing again. We just haven't played that many games lately and it's good to get out there after the Oklahoma game and play well."

On Maryland's team play:
"We worked hard for what we got tonight and hopefully that can carry over into Sunday [against NC State]."

On Maryland's post game:
"I think we try to establish ourselves inside -- every game, every half. Lonny has been our guy for the last three years scoring inside so we want to try to get hime some touches early. He did a pretty good job in the second half. I think he's still going to break out somewhere down the line."

On the play of Andre Collins:
"He played great and there will be spots where we'll need to have him in the second half of the year. He's been playing better at practice for about 10 days now and he's stepping it up a little bit. He looks a lot quicker in game situations."

On the play of Steve Blake:
"Steve was in a little bit of a slump, but you go through that in a season. His main job is to get us into the offense and to play defense. That quietly went unnoticed against Oklahoma. Steve did a great defensive job there."

On forcing turnovers:
"That was our goal tonight. We played good defense against Oklahoma, but we didn't get any turnovers. We didn't force anything. Turnovers help your offense You score off of them and it just seems to relax everybody and every jumpshot in the halfcourt offense doesn't mean as much."

On NC State:
"They have played very well lately. Winning at Syracuse is never easy, and they had a great win at Houston with a last second shot. They are enthusiastic and have some good young players. It should be a good game."

William & Mary Head Coach Rick Boyages
On his team's performance in the first half:
"We were a little sloppy in the first three or four minutes of the half, and we were sloppy over the last four minutes of the half... They are a good team in the top five nationally."

On the Tribe's effort:
"I like how we competed tonight. We could have come in here and held the ball and stalled and all of that, but we outrebounded them and were every bit as physical in or around the basket."

Closing remarks:
"I am very happy with our defense and with our rebounding tonight. The bottom line is, they have three or four NBA draft pics and we have some hardworking kids..."
