Postgame Quotes -- Maryland Versus Florida State

Feb. 14, 2001

Recap| Box Score| Notes

Maryland Coach Gary Williams
(opening comments)
"Well, we didn't lose the game in the second half, we lost it in the first half. We let Florida State get out to a lead and gain confidence. They played very well against Wake in their last game. We certainly knew that but we weren't able to come out with an intensity level to match theirs. We missed some shots I thought we had, had some loose balls we didn't get, and our defense was suspect.

"We were closer to our game in the second half. We just couldn't make the shots to get over the hump down the stretch. I didn't think we played poorly down the stretch, but you have to play for forty minutes."

(on his disappointment)
"I'm disappointed in myself. I think in this situation, I have to look at myself as a coach and try to understand why we don't do certain things, why our emotional level is not where it has to be to play in the ACC at this level. It's things like that that I take pride in controlling as a coach. We knew going into this year that the league would be rough, but we felt like we were one of the best teams."

(on the play of freshman Chris Wilcox)
"I was really proud of Chris tonight. He didn't play against North Carolina and he worked hard the last few days to get ready. He certainly came in and did what I hoped he would do -- give us an athletic presence that we hadn't had the last few games. He did everything he could to try to win the game, and I'm proud of him for that."

(on Terence Morris' attempt at the game-winning shot)
"That's as good [a shot] as you get in that situation. He's been our best three-point shooter for a while, so you get your best shooter his shot."

Florida State Coach Steve Robinson
(on the game)
"I thought this was a great college basketball game. Both teams competed and played hard. Our guys really hung in there. [Maryland] made big runs at us and the home crowd was cheering and we had some guys that stepped up and made some plays tonight that were really huge. Our guys played hard and Gary's team played hard, it came down to the last possession just like it should have come down to."

"We've played close in a number of ball games this year and each one of those games it seems like we have never been able to make those plays. Tonight was one of those nights where we got it, we finally got it. Our kids really gained confidence, each one of them, because it really wasn't just one person. Everybody contributed and it fell for us tonight. We've had a tough season, they really deserve to have a night like this. They continued to work hard, they never gave in...we played hard tonight and good things happen."

(on the end of the game)
"After Maryland came back, I just tried to get our guys to settle down. I told them we can still win the basketball game. You just have to come up with a stop and force them to take a hurried three-point shot and then finally the horn sounded."

(on containing Morris)
"I think we did a much better job at getting good position and keeping him where could not get the ball where he is most successful. Our guys really played hard."

(on the big win)
"For this team, for this time period -- it's the biggest win that we could have. We have not had success here, we haven't won here in a long time. For our guys to come in here and grind it out and keep battling back, it's a credit to them."
