
Baseball Defeats West Virginia, 5-2

CHARLESTON, S.C.- Second baseman John McCurdy (Crofton, Md.) went 2-for-4 with a home run as Maryland (3-4) defeated West Virginia (0-3) 5-2, Sunday morning at the Citadel Invitational in Charleston, S.C.
The Terps scored first with three unearned runs in the top of the second inning. After an error by West Virginia third baseman Eric Grimm, Mike D'Archangelo (Annapolis, Md.) singled in Anthony Buffone (Manalapan, N.J.) to put the Terps ahead, 1-0. Two more RBI-singles by Matt Swope (New Carrollton, Md.) and Brian Patenaude (Marietta, Ga.) increased the Terps' lead to 3-0.
In the bottom of the third, the Mountaineers got on the board with one run. After a one-out triple by Mike Frownfelter, Eric Grimm grounded out to second, scoring Frownfelter, to cut the Terrapin lead to 3-1.
Daryl Whitmer (Waldorf, Md.) led off the sixth inning with a walk and later scored on a RBI-single by Brian Patenaude, making the score 4-1. It was Patenaude's second RBI-single of the game for the Terps.
John McCurdy added a insurance run in the ninth with a towering home run down the left field line to give Maryland a 5-1 lead.
Mark Martin (Manassas, Va.) pitched six strong innings allowing just one run on four hits to pick up his second win of the season. Martin (2-0) tied a season-high with four strikeouts.
West Virginia starter Vance McCracken (0-1) suffered the loss for the Mountaineers.
The Terps return to the diamond Friday, March 2, with a game on the road at Howard.The action is set to begin at 2:30 p.m.
