
Terps Stumble At No. 3 Georgia Tech, 8-1

ATLANTA, Ga.- Rhett Parrott tossed eight innings, allowing just one run on three hits, as No. 3 Georgia Tech defeated Maryland 8-1 Saturday afternoon at Russ Chandler Stadium in Atlanta.
The Terps took their first lead of the series in the first inning with a sacrifice fly off the bat of third baseman Steve Oursler (Clinton, Md.). Brian Patenaude (Marietta, Ga.) led off the game with a walk and Chuck Easter (Baltimore, Md.) doubled, setting up Oursler's sacrifice fly, scoring Patenaude.
Georgia Tech answered right back in the bottom half of the first, scoring three runs to take a 3-1 lead. The Yellow Jackets scored their first run on a RBI walk from Bryan Prince, which scored Matthew Boggs. Later in the inning, Brad Stockton delivered a two-out, two-run single to left, scoring Victor Menocal and Richard Lewis.
The Yellow Jackets broke the game open in the sixth with five runs to increase their lead to 8-1. A bases loaded walk by Prince, his second of the game, opened the scoring for the Jackets. Jason Perry followed with a two-run single and Jason Basil hit a RBI single to give Tech a 7-1 advantage. The final run of the game was scored when Bryan Prince scored on a wild pitch by Terrapin reliever Matt Basinger (Connellsville, Pa.).
Maryland starter Jared Stuart (Corning, N.Y.) pitched 5.2 innings and yielded seven runs on six hits to fall to 1-3 on the year. Parrott, the ACC leader in victories, is now 6-1 this season.
The Terps fall to 5-14 overall and 0-5 in the ACC while Georgia Tech is now 19-6 and 3-2 in the conference.
Both teams will play the series finale tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
