Towson, Md. - Junior righthander Bryan Simmering
and three other Tiger pitchers combined on a five-hitter as
Towson University (11-4) rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat the University
of Maryland (5-16) by 7-3 at Schuerholz Park on Tuesday afternoon.
Simmering picked up his second victory of the season by holding the Terps to
one run on two hits in four innings of work. Senior lefthander Matt Brady
started for the Tigers but left after two innings, trailing 1-0. Senior righthander Bryan Rogers pitched two innings in relief while freshman
righthander Jason Summerlin pitched a
scoreless ninth inning to complete the win.
Now 2-1 on the season, Simmering had five strikeouts and just one walk in
his four innings.
Maryland took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as junior Matt Swope (New Carrollton, Md.) led off with a single and moved to second base
when senior first baseman Chuck Easter (Baltimore, Md.)
was hit by a pitch. With two out, Swope and Easter pulled off a double
steal. Swope scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch by Brady.
The Terrapins added a run in the fourth inning. Sophomore second baseman
John McCurdy (Crofton, Md.) led off with a triple and scored on
a single by senior shortstop Sean Lomas (Brewster, N.Y.).
Senior righthander Mark Martin (Manassas, Va.) made
that 2-0 lead stand up until the sixth inning, holding the Tigers scoreless
through five innings on just one hit. But, the Tigers rallied for four runs
in the sixth inning to take the lead.
Freshman first baseman Mike Costello led off with a single and senior leftfielder Jimmy Kittelberger tied the game with a two-run home run.
After senior Gregg Davies reached on an error,
sophomore second baseman Tom Trela singled.
Davies scored on a two-out single by freshman shortstop Brian McKenna
to put the Tigers ahead, 3-2. Another
Terrapin error allowed Trela to score with the fourth run of the inning.
In the seventh inning, the Terrapins loaded the bases with one out. However,
Rogers pitched out of the jam and allowed just one run as Easter picked up
an RBI on an infield grounder.
Towson added three more runs in the seventh as junior third baseman Scott
Bacon doubled home Kittelberger and Davies. A
sacrifice fly by McKenna put the Tigers safely ahead, 7-3.
The Terrapins return to action tomorrow when they travel to George Washington. The two teams are set to begin play at 3 p.m. at Barcroft Park in Arlington, Va.
