Arlington, Va.-Senior designated hitter Brian Patenaude (Marietta, Ga.) went 2-for-5 with four runs batted in and junior center fielder Matt Swope (New Carrollton, Md.) and senior third baseman Steve Oursler (Clinton, Md.) each knocked in three runs as Maryland defeated George Washington, 11-9, Wednesday afternoon at Barcroft Park in Arlington, Va.
Swope led off the game in style, going deep over the left-center fence. With the homer, it marked the third time this season that Swope has led off a game with a homerun.
The Colonials would tie the game in the second when second baseman Chris Berry went deep to left.
In the third, Maryland would once again take the lead on the first of Patenaude's four RBIs on the day. After freshman Anthony Buffone (Manalapan, N.J.) singled to start the inning, Patenaude would bring him around to score with a single to left field, making it 2-1 Maryland.
GW scored two runs in the bottom half of the third to regain the lead, 3-2. The score would stay that way until seventh when the Terrapins' bats began to warm up.
The Terps would plate nine runs in the seventh and eighth. In the seventh, Maryland scored five times, including a two-RBI single by Swope and a key two-out, three-run single off the bat of Oursler.
In the eighth, Buffone delivered a run-scoring single to center and Patenaude launched a three-run homer over the left field fence to give the Terrapins' a commanding 11-3 advantage. The homerun for Patenaude was the first of the season for the Georgia native.
GW would score six times over the final two inning to close out the scoring at 11-9.
Sophomore pitcher Todd Ainsworth (Hershey, Pa.) won his first game in two years for the Terps by pitching 1.1 innings in relief of starter Matt Basinger (Connellsville, Pa.). Ainsworth missed most of the 2000 season with Tommy John surgery on his right elbow and last won on May 5, 1999 against Richmond. GW starter Chris Worth tossed six innings and allowed five runs on seven hits to fall to 2-3.
The Terrapins return to the field this weekend (Mar. 30-Apr.1) when they travel to Duke to face the Blue Devils. The key ACC series for both schools will begin Friday night at 7 p.m. at Jack Combs Field. Saturday's game, which is slated to start at 1 p.m., is the ACC Game of the Week and can be seen live on Home Team Sports, Fox Sports South and the Sunshine Network.
