Women's Tennis Drops First ACC Match

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The women's tennis team (5-6, 0-1 ACC) dropped its first ACC match Saturday in College Park, Md. on the outdoor courts. The Terps battled through a close match with Georgia Tech who claimed the 4-3 conference win. Maryland dominated doubles play winning two matches and earning the team doubles point. The Terps also claimed two singles victories but that was not enough to defeat the Yellow Jackets who are No. 2 in the ACC with a 2-1 record.
In the No. 1 doubles freshman Olivia Dubovikov (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and junior Pamela Floro (Manilla, Philippines) earned the first Maryland victory with an 8-6 win over Bobbie Guthrie and Kristen Roberson. This brings their dual record to 3-1 on the season. Senior Catherine Valantin (Metz, France) teamed up with freshman Chloe Chavardes (St. Nombreteche, France) to secure the doubles team point with an 8-5 win over Mason Miller and Fallon Koon. Together this pair has earned six consecutive doubles wins since February 21.
Valantin earned her fifth consecutive singles win this season when she downed Guthrie 7-5, 6-4 at No. 3. She is a close second to freshman Delila Causevic (Silver Spring, Md.) who captured her seventh singles win against Georgia Tech. She defeated Debbie Reynolds 7-5, 6-2 at No. 1.
The Terps continue ACC play on Sunday when they meet Clemson at 1:00 p.m. The match is slated to be played on the outdoor courts, weather permitting. Matches will be moved to the College Park Tennis Bubble if there is inclement weather. The Terps then hit the road to face Duke in Durham, N.C. on April 7 and North Carolina in Chapel Hill on April 8.
