University of Maryland junior Corey Brigham carded rounds of 68 and 66 to open up a commanding five-shot lead after 36 holes of the Wofford Invitational here Friday. The Terrapins are in third place as a team, four shots out of first place, heading into Saturday's final 18 holes.
Brigham, who entered the 54-hole tournament third on the team in scoring average this spring, shot a four-under-par 68 over the first 18 holes, then came back with a six-under 66 on the second 18. His 36-hole total of 134 is five shots better than Julian James of Coastal Carolina, who is at 71-68--139.
Johnson Wagner of Virginia Tech is in third place with a two-round total of 140.
Coastal Carolina leads the 11-team field with an even-par total of 576. Furman is in second place at 579 (+3), with Maryland in third at 580 (+4).
Maryland is the defending champion in the tournament, which is being contested at the 6,765-yard, par-72 Carolina Country Club Course.
Maryland freshman Tim Kane is at two-over par with a 36-hole total of 146, good for a tie for 16th place. Other Terp scores include sophomore John Moheyer (148, tie for 26th), freshman Jimmy Cunningham (152, tie for 34th), and Pete Toole (158, tie for 49th). Moheyer rebounded with a three-under 69 after opening with an 80.
