COLLEGE PARK, Md.- Mount St. Mary's pitchers Brian Santo and Robert Taylor combined to limit Maryland to two runs on three hits as the Mountaineers upset the Terps, 9-2, Tuesday night at Shipley Field. Santo started the contest and did not allow a hit over his 4.1 innings of work. He fanned five but also walked five batters.
The Mountaineers opened the game with single runs in the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead. In the first, Jeff Koenig doubled to right field to score Tommy Merical to give the Mount a 1-0 advantage.
In the second, an infield single by Jason Weszka gave the Mountaineers their second run of the game. A RBI single off the bat of Chris Staub in the third pushed Mount St. Mary's lead to 3-0.
Santo was dominant in his 4.1 innings of work, allowing just two runs. The two runs came in the fourth inning after Santo walked the bases loaded. A fielding error by Koenig gave the Terps their first run when senior LF Brian Patenaude (Marietta, Ga.) scampered home on the play. Later in the inning, junior DH Ray Gemmill (Silver Spring, Md.) launched a sacrifice fly to right, to score senior 1B Chuck Easter (Baltimore, Md.).
The Mountaineers would add single runs in the fifth and seventh innings before putting the game out of reach with four runs in the ninth. The Mountaineers hit three doubles in the ninth, including a two-RBI double off the bat DH Aaron Ennis and a two-run two-bagger by Jason Weszka.
Taylor came in for Santo and limited the Terps to just three hits over 4.2 innings. He improved to 2-2 with the win as he struck out five. Maryland starter Steve Schmoll (Rockville, Md.) was tabbed with the loss and fell to 1-5.
The loss dropped the Terps to 11-24 on the season while the Mountaineers improved to 8-26. Maryland is back in action tomorrow with a doubleheader against Maryland Eastern-Shore. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. at Shipley Field.
