COLLEGE PARK, Md.- The Maryland baseball team scored six runs in the seventh and eighth innings but it was not quite enough as James Madison held on for an 8-7 victory Wednesday evening at Shipley Field. The Terps trailed 7-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning but could not come all the way back.
The Dukes jumped out to a commanding 5-0 lead after the first inning. JMU tallied five hits off Maryland starter Matt Basinger (Connellsville, Pa.) to plate five runs to open the contest. Eddie Kim had a RBI single in the inning to extend his hitting streak to 14 games to highlight the Dukes' first.
JMU starter Kurt Isenberg held the Terps to just one run over six innings before the Maryland bats got going. Senior SS Sean Lomas (Brewster, N.Y.) drove in the Terrapins' first run of the game in the fifth with a home run to deep left center. The long ball was Lomas' third of the season.
After James Madison stretched the lead to 7-1 in the seventh, the Terps crossed home plate five times to close the deficit to 7-6. Maryland had five hits in the frame including a three-run double off the bat of senior LF Brian Patenaude (Marietta, Ga.).
JMU added an important run in the eighth to widen the lead to 8-6. Lomas (2-for-4, 2 runs, 2 RBI) delivered his second RBI of the game with a groundout in the eighth to score senior 3B Steve Oursler (Clinton, Md.), making it 8-7 JMU.
The Terrapins got two runners on board in the ninth before James Madison closer Chris Cochran recorded his second save of the year to end the Maryland threat. Isenberg pitched a career-high 8.1 innings and fanned 11 to improve to 2-2. Basinger tossed three innings and yielded six runs on seven hits to fall to 2-2.
The loss sends Maryland to 13-28 overall while James Madison improves to 26-18-1.
The Terps continue their 11-game homestand Friday night against Wake Forest. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. at Shipley Field.
