Terps Prepare to Face Blue Devils and Tar Heels on the Road
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The women's tennis team (5-7, 0-2 ACC) stumbled in its first weekend of ACC play after a 20-day hiatus in which the only match scheduled was postponed due to rain. The Terps look to regroup as they prepare to hit the road for three away conference matches.
Maryland first heads to Durham, N.C. on April 7 to meet Duke at noon. Duke is 13-1 overall and ranked No. 2 nationally. The Blue Devils are coming off of a 7-0 victory over Florida State in their first ACC match of the season. On Sunday, the Terps will meet North Carolina in Chapel Hill at noon. The Tar Heels are currently ranked No. 14 with a 9-4 record. They also won their first ACC match this spring against No. 55 Florida State.
Scouting Duke and North Carolina
The Blue Devils are led by freshman Ansley Cargill who is ranked No. 2 in singles by the ITA. She holds a 21-2 record for the spring. Senior Kathy Sell continues to dominate in the conference. A two-time ACC selection, she is ranked No. 15 nationally. Sell is 19-5 in singles competition for the spring. She and doubles partner, Cargill, are ranked No. 35 by the ITA. Freshman Amanda Johnson with senior partner Megan Miller are ranked No. 3 nationally with a 9-4 overall record.
Sophomores Marlene Mejia and Kate Pinchbeck lead the Tar Heels in singles victories with 24 and 22, respectively. Mejia holds a No. 14 national ranking while Pinchbeck is currently No. 86. Freshman Julie Rotondi is ranked No. 57 in singles play. She teams up with Mejia in doubles for a No. 32 national ranking.
Maryland Drops First Two ACC Matches in College Park
Sophomore Delila Causevic (Silver Spring, Md.) and senior Catherine Valantin (Metz, France) lead the team in singles victories after netting two each last weekend against ACC foes Georgia Tech and Clemson. Causevic has earned a team-high eight dual wins while Valantin has netted six consecutive singles wins. She has not lost a match so far this spring. Freshman Chloe Chavardes (St. Nombreteche, France) also garnered her sixth singles win against Clemson. Earning their third and fourth doubles victories together, freshman Olivia Dubovikov (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and junior Pamela Floro (Manilla, Philippines) dominated at No. 1 doubles.
