
WUSA's Washington Freedom Tops Maryland, 5-0, In Women's Soccer Exhibition

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The WUSA's Washington Freedom toppped the Maryland women's soccer team, 5-0, in an exhibition match Friday night at Ludwig Field.
The night was a smashing success as 2,415 packed Ludwig Field for the great event featuring the world's top player Mia Hamm of the Freedom. Also on hand was Freedom owner and WUSA founder John Hendricks.
"This was just a great night to have the Freedom here playing against us," said Maryland head coach Shannon Higgins-Cirovski. "We battled hard against some of the greatest players in thw world. I'm very proud of my team and proud the fans who came out to support women's soccer."
The Freedom jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half on goals by Brazilian star Pretinha and Hamm, both in the 27th minute. Washington got three more goals in the second half from Roseli, Justi Baumgardt and Tracy Milburn.
It was also a homecoming for Maryland's all-time leading scorer Keri Sarver, who made her debut with the Freedom after missing time with an injury.
The Freedom open up the WUSA season on April 14 at RFK Stadium against the Bay Area CyberRays. Maryland continiues its spring seasomn with a tournament at the Practice Field behind Byrd Stadium this Sunday.
