COLLEGE PARK, Md.- Sophomore outfielder Edwin Thompson (Jay, Maine) recorded a career-high three hits in leading the Maryland Terrapins to a 12-10 victory over UMBC Tuesday night at Shipley Field. Thompson went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two runs batted in.
The Retrievers grabbed an early 1-0 lead off the Terps in the opening inning. Greg Deboy knocked in the first of his four RBIs on a fielder's choice to score John Shuler.
The UMBC lead did not last long as the Terps jumped all over UMBC starter Ashley Roque to score six runs in the bottom of the first. Roque only lasted 1/3 of an inning as he surrendered all six runs on five hits. The Terrapins had four extra-base hits in the frame including a RBI triple by sophomore second baseman John McCurdy (Crofton, Md.) and a pair of run-scoring doubles from senior shortstop Sean Lomas (Brewster, N.Y.) and freshman catcher Anthony Buffone (Manalapan, N.J.). When all the damage was done, the Terps held a 6-1 lead after one inning of play.
The Retrievers got back into the contest with four runs in the top of the third. Scott Kosmicky got things started with a RBI single to left and Adam Hawkey belted a two-run triple to pull the Retrievers to within one at 6-5.
Maryland responded with a four-run inning of its own in the bottom of the fourth to stretch the lead to 10-5. McCurdy led off the inning with one of his three hits on the night, a single, and later stole second to start the Maryland fourth. Senior third baseman Steve Oursler (Clinton, Md.) followed with a RBI single to right to plate McCurdy. Senior first baseman Chuck Easter (Baltimore, Md.) then continued to feast on UMBC pitching as he drilled his fourth home run of the year to put the Terps up 9-5. In two games this season against the Retrievers, Easter has gone 5-for-9 with a pair of homers and seven RBIs. Later in the inning, Thompson stroked a double to right center to score Lomas and put Maryland up 10-5.
UMBC battled back with two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to tie the contest at 10. With the momentum back on UMBC's side, the Terrapins rallied to score two runs in the home half of the seventh to put the game away.
A bases loaded walk to McCurdy forced in the game-winning run to put the Terps on top for good at 11-10. Easter added an important insurance run with a RBI groundout to give Maryland a 12-10 advantage with two innings to play.
Maryland reliever Jared Stuart (Corning, N.Y.) made the lead stand as he tossed 3.2 shutout innings in relief to pick up the win. Stuart limited UMBC to just three hits to improve to 3-6 on the season.
The victory gives Maryland a 15-30 record and a season sweep over the Retrievers. In two games against UMBC this season, the Terps tied a season-high with 17 hits in each contest. The loss sends UMBC to 25-13-2.
The Terrapins continue their homestand tomorrow against another local foe, Towson. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
