COLLEGE PARK, Md. - University of Maryland senior Jen Adams was named the women's recipient of the inaugural Tewaaraton Trophy, which recognizes the nation's best male and female collegiate lacrosse players. Adams was joined by Hofstra midfielder Doug Shanahan as the award's first recipients.
On the women's side, Adams was joined by four other nominees including teammate and fellow All-American Quinn Carney.
"I think it is a real honor, the other nominees I hold in a lot of respect," said Adams. "I think (the award) is a great thing for the growth of lacrosse, and women's lacrosse in particular."
In four years, Adams accomplished more than any player in Maryland -- and arguably collegiate -- history. She was a member of four national championship teams, was named All-American three times and national player of the year twice (with this year's yet to be determined). She scored more goals and assists in 2001 than any player in NCAA Division I while setting the all-time collegiate marks for points (445) and assists (178).
The Tewaaraton Trophy is named after what the Mohawk Nation called the sport of lacrosse. In her being named the award's recipient, the University of Maryland will be awarded a $10,000 scholarship in Adams' name.
