COLLEGE PARK, Md. - University of Maryland conducted its first full scrimmage of fall camp Saturday afternoon and head coach Ralph Friedgen, two weeks away from his major-college head coaching debut, termed the session in front of about 250 fans a success.

"We're making progress," said Friedgen, who noted that 90 percent of the team's offense and defense has been installed. "It's just not as fast as maybe I would like. But I'm not disappointed. We're a little dead-legged right now, but that's to be expected. We've still got to install [some of our defenses] as well as our red zone offense. We have a week to tune things up and then we start zeroing in on North Carolina."

The Terps open their 2001 campaign Sept. 1 at Byrd Stadium vs. the Tar Heels. The game, which kicks off at noon, will be televised on a split-national basis by ABC.

Starting quarterback Shaun Hill, directing the first offensive unit, completed 8 of 15 passes for 73 yards. He was intercepted twice. Backup QB Latrez Harrison, a redshirt sophomore, was 4 of 11 for 25 yards.

Sophomore tailback Bruce Perry, No. 2 on the depth chart, led the running backs with 26 yards on six carries. True freshman Jason Crawford carried nine times for 14 yards, and senior Marc Riley picked up 16 yards on four totes. Three receivers had two receptions each, including redshirt freshman Maurice Shanks, who had grabs covering 14 and 29 yards. Junior Scooter Monroe had a pair of catches for 14 yards and senior tight end Matt Murphy had two catches for three yards.

Defensive standouts included sophomore cornerback Curome Cox, who had four tackles, two pass breakups and an interception, sophomore linebacker Mike Whaley, who had a 10-yard sack among three tackles, and linebacker Andrew Henley, who had five tackles. Senior safety Rod Littles also had a pick.

Ralph Friedgen Comments:

On QB Latrez Harrison:
"He did some good things today. He missed some checks, but he's such an athlete that he overcomes it sometimes. The thing that impressed me with Latrez was that he kept his poise a little more today. I thought overall he showed improvement today, and I was pleased with that."

On WR Maurice Shanks:
"He makes plays. If I find any playmakers, they're going to be in the lineup."

On running backs:
"I thought Bruce Perry did some good things and ran as hard as I've seen him run. I think Jason Crawford is a little tentative, which is understandable for a freshman, and I thought Marc Riley did some good things. I also thought James Lynch, and all the fullbacks, did some good things blocking since they didn't run the ball much."
