Women's Soccer Heads To Duke For Sunday Clash

  • Both Maryland and No. 17 Duke enter the ACC opener for both teams coming off 3-0 wins on Friday night. Maryland topped Towson 3-0 before 1,025 fans at Ludwig Field on a pair of goals by sophomore Katie Ludwig (Mount Laurel, N.J.) and the first career goal by Lindsay Givens (Downingtown, Pa.). Senior goalkeeper Ali Wolff (Richmond, Va.) made one save to move her career shutout total to 13.5.

  • Duke beat Davidson, 3-0 to give new coach Robbie Church a win his Duke debut. Alison Sanders scored twice and Brigid Bowdell added an unassisted goal.

    SERIES NOTES WITH DUKE

  • Duke holds a 10-7-3 in the all-time matchups with Maryland.

  • The Blue Devils won last year's meeting, 2-1 at Ludwig Field on Sept. 1, 2000. Ali Kopfman broke a 1-1 tie late in the fist half to give Duke the win. Kim King (Media, Pa.) scored the Terps lone goal.

  • Maryland has won four of the last five in the series against Duke and has a 5-2-1 record in the last seven contests.

  • Maryland picked up two of its biggest wins in the 2000 season against Duke. The Terps defeated the-then No. 9 Blue Devils in the regular season meeting on Sept. 19, 4-3 in overtime as Sara Gustafson notched the game winner 7:14 into the first overtime. Maryland also knocked the Blue Devils out of the ACC Tournament with a 2-1 win as Gustafson scored for the third time against Duke in 1999. Jackie Mynarski tallied the game-winner with 13:48 left in regulation.

  • Maryland's last four wins over Duke have come when the Blue Devils were ranked: No. 21 (on Nov. 4, 1999 in the ACC Tournament), No. 9 (on Sept. 19, 1999), No. 8 (on Sept. 18, 1998) and No. 9 (Nov. 7, 1997 in ACC Tournament). For the 2001 meeting, Duke is ranked No. 17 in the preseason NSCAA poll.

  • Prior to beating No. 4 Penn State last season, Maryland's win over a highest ranked team came against then-No. 7 Duke on Oct. 1, 1995 when the Terps topped the Blue Devils, 2-1 in Durham.
